Traveller Animal Welfare became a registered charity in 2008. It was founded and is run by Fiona Gammell. Fiona is a past Trustee/Vice President and voluntary Cruelty Inspector for Wicklow SPCA. She has over 40 years experience of animal welfare/cruelty. While working as a cruelty Inspector Fiona found that a lot of the calls being submitted to WSPCA involved cases of suspected cruelty to animals by members of the Traveller Community. When Fiona investigated these cases, she found that in a lot of instances the problem was lack of education regarding the welfare and care of animals. This encouraged her to start her own charity dealing primarily with animals belonging to members of the Traveller community. Fiona believes that there is no point 'complaining' about a situation, it is better to tackle the problem head-on and actually 'do' something to help instead of doing nothing. Fiona feels that there should be at least one person in every SPCA/rescue who deals primarily with Traveller animal issues.
Our Mission is to improve animal welfare within the Traveller community and beyond through education, practical assistance like free veterinary care and neutering, and a compassionate rehoming program. We strive to prevent animal suffering and promote responsible pet ownership.
Our Vision is a community where all animals are treated with respect and compassion, where responsible pet ownership is widespread, and where no animal suffers due to lack of education or resources.
Traveller Animal Welfare offers a range of programs and services designed to improve animal welfare and support responsible pet ownership:
Education: We provide educational programs to members of the Traveller community on responsible animal care, including welfare, health, and relevant legislation. These programs are delivered at Traveller Education Centres and cover topics such as proper feeding, housing, healthcare, and the importance of neutering.
Veterinary Care Assistance: We offer practical assistance by providing free worm, flea, and mange treatment for dogs. When resources allow, we also provide free horse wormers. This service addresses immediate health needs and prevents the spread of common ailments.
Neutering Program: We facilitate free neutering for dogs and cats, recognizing the critical role of population control in animal welfare. We overcome barriers by directly collecting animals, transporting them to veterinary clinics, covering the costs, and returning them home.
Rehoming Program: We operate a rehoming program for dogs and cats. We take in animals in need, provide necessary veterinary care, and work to find them loving forever homes. We collaborate with other rescues to expand our reach and rehoming opportunities.
Rescue of Equines: We also rescue horses, ponies, and donkeys, providing them with a safe haven and necessary care. A sponsoring scheme is available for those who wish to support these rescued animals.
Advocacy: We advocate for improved animal welfare standards and work to raise awareness about the importance of responsible pet ownership within the wider community.
